Does Grammarly Count as AI? The Question Every Student and Teacher Keeps Getting Wrong

Grammarly used to be one thing. Now it's two.

Grammarly launched in 2009 as a grammar and spell-check tool. For most of the 2010s, "using Grammarly" meant accepting suggested fixes to commas, subject-verb agreement, and passive voice. More than 3,000 colleges and universities hold institutional Grammarly accounts and actively encourage students to use it this way (Grammarly for Education, cited by Inside Higher Ed).

Grammarly didn't stop at grammar checking. Its own support documentation shows how far the 2023 shift went: the product now includes "Superhuman Go" AI agents, on-demand generative assistance that can "quickly compose, rewrite, ideate, and reply," plus an AI Chat feature that can draft an outline or a full passage from a prompt (Grammarly Support: Introducing generative AI assistance). None of that is an editing suggestion anymore — it's a tool that writes the sentence for you, the same category of capability as ChatGPT, just delivered inside a familiar plug-in.

People often mix up two products Grammarly offers. Its given name is the same for both products. A quick look at the names confuses moments of clarifying technical functions. As a result, similar branding prompts messy interpretations about one product.

Why this became a real problem, not a hypothetical one

The University of North Georgia offers the clearest cautionary example, and it's a case worth reading carefully because it actually undercuts a clean basic-vs-generative story rather than proving it. Student Marley Stevens says she used only Grammarly's basic proofreading features on a criminal justice essay, not any rewrite or generative tool, and was placed on academic probation for what her professor called "unintentionally cheating," receiving a zero on the assignment (USA Today; Fast Company). Grammarly itself told reporters covering her case that it "wrote absolutely nothing" for her. This is, by the account both Stevens and Grammarly gave, a false positive on ordinary basic corrections — the exact scenario a basic-corrections-are-safe framework says shouldn't happen.

Notre Dame ran into the same wall from the other direction, and its own stated policy goes further than the Stevens case: the school's guidance explicitly says Grammarly's basic editing suggestions are themselves AI-generated text, so even a small number of accepted suggestions can get a paper flagged by a detector as "100% likely" AI-generated — and the policy states plainly that this is not a false positive, since the detector is correctly identifying real AI-generated content sitting inside the document (University of Notre Dame Honor Code, "Policy Update: AI Editing Tools"). Its Office of Academic Standards separately told Inside Higher Ed that professors kept flagging papers that "looked so completely different" from a student's usual work, only to learn the student had simply used Grammarly (Inside Higher Ed, Nov. 2024). Notre Dame's response, effective fall 2024, was to explicitly fold "AI-powered editing tools like Grammarly and WordTune" into any professor's generative-AI ban unless that professor says otherwise — treating basic editing suggestions as AI use by definition, not as a safe category. As Notre Dame's Ardea Russo put it, faculty are "all over the place" — some encourage Grammarly for everything, others ban it outright, and students are left guessing which rule applies in which class.

Put together, Stevens and Notre Dame are the two central examples in this piece, and both are real-world cases where a clean "basic corrections are low-risk, generative rewriting is the real risk" framework actually broke down or was explicitly rejected by the institution itself. That's the real cost of an ambiguous policy: not villains gaming the system, but honest students and inconsistent institutional logic colliding, with no universal safe zone either side can rely on.

What actually gets flagged — and why a blanket answer fails

An AI detector evaluates how likely it is for a passage to be generated, not whether a user used a service such as Grammarly. In principle, a handful of comma and spelling fixes should move that measure very little, while a full AI-rewritten paragraph should move it a lot, since the rewrite genuinely supplants the writer's word choices with the model's. In practice, as the Notre Dame policy and the Stevens case above both show, that clean separation doesn't always hold at the sentence level — even small, mechanical suggestions are technically AI-generated text, and a detector scoring at the sentence or aggregate level can pick that up. The size of the effect is smaller for basic edits than for a full rewrite, but "smaller" isn't "zero," which is exactly the gap a blanket "basic corrections are safe" rule glosses over.

A 2025 peer-reviewed study on detector reliability found that when AI detectors were used individually, they still produced meaningful false-positive rates on genuine student writing; when the same detectors were used in aggregate — cross-checked against each other rather than relied on alone — the false-positive rate dropped to nearly zero (Hyatt et al., Advances in Physiology Education, 2025). That single finding explains a lot of the Grammarly confusion: a single detector reacting to a heavily-edited paragraph can look identical to a false alarm, even when nothing generative happened. Punishing on one score alone is exactly the failure mode that study warns against.

The notion that removing Grammarly would be a tidy solution misses the point. One pupil ran a spell-checker, approved three comma changes, and produced no AI content. Another pupil submitted a paragraph to an AI chat, took the revision and submitted it as his own work. Lumping those behaviors together reveals a flaw in the current integrity policy. What is needed is a detector that shrinks the gap rather than expands it.

What a fair policy — and a fair detector — should actually check for

If you're an educator writing (or rewriting) an AI policy, the useful question isn't "is Grammarly allowed." It's: does this assignment permit generative assistance, and if so, how much? A policy stated in those terms survives Grammarly's next feature update, and the next tool after that.

Basic editing, spelling, grammar, style, is safe. The real warning signs are button labels that read "rewrite," "compose," "generate," or "AI Chat." Checking the final draft before submission is a cheap way to detect if an edit has slipped past the risk line. A five-minute inspection outstrips any probation hearing in speed.
